What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on bodywork technique that helps release tension in the central nervous system—promoting overall relaxation, healing, and balance.
It works by using light touch (typically 5 grams or less—about the weight of a nickel) to evaluate and improve the functioning of the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes and fluid surrounding your brain and spinal cord.
What Is the Craniosacral System?
The craniosacral system consists of:
- Cranial bones (skull)
- Spinal cord
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
- Dura mater and membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord
A healthy craniosacral system is important for the nervous system to function at its best.
What Happens During a CST Session?
- You remain fully clothed, lying face up on a massage table.
- The therapist gently places their hands on your head, sacrum, neck, back, or feet, following the subtle rhythm of the craniosacral fluid.
- The goal is to detect and release restrictions or imbalances in the system.
- Most clients experience deep relaxation, and some may fall asleep.
